Authenticity. In my mind this is metal. It gets no heavier, no more crushing. At the same time these guys have the mostincredible chops. And this DVD captures Gojira in front of a home crowd that is having one mass simultaneous out-of-bodyexperience. Sweat, hair, and probably some blood fly as the force of the volume blows the kids off the stage during theircontinuous stage-diving antics. Yes, this is a real concert, not the lame choreographed "performances" that pass for rockconcerts most of the time, with security guards on power trips. Gojira not only put up with this youthful exuberance, theyseem to thrive on the energy and they seem to be regular guys rather than ego freaks. The energy level of the band is on 11for the entire show-everyone is good but as usual the drummer just astounds with this lightning double bass-blasting. Not myfavorite style of drumming but I'll live with it for Gojira. The riffs are lightning fast and intricate with both guitar andbass handling some very cool shifts and tempo changes with ease. Vocals are of the "extreme" variety and it's a shame thatthis will be enough to stop some from checking out this great band. The quality of the video is first rate and the modestlight show is wonderful without distracting anyone from the blissful sonic pummeling. Song descriptions would bepointless.basically just: kickass, kickass, kickass, kickass, etc. All you need to know is that if you love real metalwithout the dragons, maidens, and fanciness, you need to hear the kings of French metal. Borrowing from Phil Hartman's SNLskit about Sinatra trash talking Billy Idol, but applying it to Gojira, I'll just say that "Gojira have chunks of bands likeRiverside in their stool." Absolutely essential for fans of hard-core metal. For those who have toyed with the idea of checking some out but weren'tsure which band really has the goods, Gojira is the real deal. This DVD is good because the visual aspect of their live showis important. But if you'd rather try a CD, start with Mars to Sirius because it has the most prog tendencies whereas thisearlier material is more pure, though still complex and amazing enough for prog metal fans in my opinion. Again, Ansen, ifyou read this, thanks so much for introducing me to a real personal favorite, Gojira. social review comments Review PermalinkPosted Thursday, December 6, 2007 Review this album Report (Review #154535)
